SGPA to CGPA Calculator

Convert your Semester Grade Point Averages (SGPA) into a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) using both the credit-weighted method and simple average method. Enter each semester's SGPA and credit hours for precise results.

Enter SGPA and credit hours for each semester. CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).

Weighted CGPA

—

How it works

Weighted average (Method 1)

CGPA = (SGPA₁ × Credits₁ + SGPA₂ × Credits₂ + …) ÷ Total credits. Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, sum the products, divide by total credits.

Simple average (Method 2)

CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + …) ÷ Number of semesters. Add all SGPAs and divide by the count. Use only when all semesters carry equal credits.

Worked examples

Weighted example

Semester 1: SGPA 7.2 × 20 credits = 144. Semester 2: SGPA 8.0 × 22 credits = 176. Total credits = 42. Weighted sum = 320. CGPA = 320 ÷ 42 ≈ 7.62.

Simple average example

Same SGPAs: (7.2 + 8.0) ÷ 2 = 7.60. Notice the difference — credits matter.

Key points

Use weighted average for accuracy (most universities require it). Keep two decimals during calculation. Include all semesters. Failed subjects count as zero until cleared. Always verify with your university's official rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can SGPA be greater than CGPA?

Yes. A strong semester can push your SGPA above your overall CGPA. CGPA is a cumulative average, so a single high SGPA can exceed it, especially early in your program.

What happens to CGPA if I fail a subject?

A failed subject contributes zero grade points until you clear it. This lowers your weighted CGPA because the credits still count in the denominator. Retaking and passing the subject replaces the zero with earned points.

How many semesters are needed to calculate CGPA?

CGPA uses all completed semesters. For a running CGPA, include every semester finished so far. For a final degree CGPA, include all semesters in your programme.

What is the formula to calculate percentage from CGPA?

Many Indian universities use Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Some use different multipliers (e.g., ×10 or ×9.0). Always check your university's official conversion rule.

Is simple or weighted average better for SGPA to CGPA?

Weighted average is more accurate because it accounts for different credit hours per semester. Simple average only works when every semester has identical credits.

Do companies really check CGPA during placements?

Yes. Many employers set a minimum CGPA cutoff (often 7.5 or 8.0 on a 10-point scale). Falling below can disqualify you from the hiring process before interviews.

Can I convert my CGPA to a 4.0 GPA for US universities?

Yes. Use a standard converter like WES or Scholaro, or a dedicated CGPA to 4.0 GPA calculator. US universities often evaluate your transcript directly rather than relying on a single conversion.

How do I raise my CGPA after a low SGPA?

Score higher in remaining semesters and retake backlogs. Our real-time dashboard shows exactly what SGPA you need in future semesters to reach your target CGPA.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures one term's performance. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) tracks your entire academic journey across all semesters.

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's grade points by its credit hours, sum those products, then divide by total credit hours for the semester. Formula: Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits).

Which CGPA calculation method do universities use?

Most universities use the weighted average method (Method 1). Some may use simple average if all semesters have equal credits. Check your university's academic regulations for the official method.
