How it works

SGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ total credits

Worked example

Math: 4 credits × 4.0 = 16, Physics: 3 × 3.0 = 9, English: 2 × 3.7 = 7.4. Total credits = 9, total points = 32.4. SGPA = 32.4 ÷ 9 ≈ 3.60

Frequently asked questions

How is SGPA calculated?

SGPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points: SGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits. Each subject's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, the results are summed, and the total is divided by your total credits. This weights larger courses more heavily than smaller ones, giving an accurate snapshot of your semester performance.

What grade scales does this tool support?

The tool supports the standard 4.0 scale used in the US and Canada, a 10-point scale common in Indian universities, and a custom scale where you enter any numeric grade points directly. Pick your scale from the dropdown and the grade options update automatically.

Can I enter fractional credits?

Yes. Credits such as 1.5, 2.5, or 0.75 are accepted and used exactly as entered. The calculator never rounds intermediate values, so fractional credits and grade points are handled precisely in the final SGPA.

What happens to my SGPA if I fail a course?

A failing grade contributes zero grade points but still counts toward your total credits, which lowers your SGPA. Retake the course and the new grade points replace the zero, bringing your SGPA back up.

How do I convert my SGPA to a percentage?

Different regions use different formulas. A common UGC method is (SGPA × 10) − 7.5, while another is SGPA × 9.5. Convert only if your institution publishes a specific formula, since direct multiplication can overstate your percentage.

Is my data saved or sent somewhere?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Nothing you enter is saved, logged, or transmitted to a server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

How many subjects can I add?

There is no hard limit. Click Add subject to insert a new row for each course, fill in its credits and grade, and the SGPA updates instantly as you type. The calculator handles typical semesters of up to 30 subjects smoothly.

Why is my SGPA shown with two decimal places?

GPAs are conventionally reported to two decimal places for consistency across transcripts. The calculator rounds only the final SGPA to two decimals while keeping full precision internally, so rounding never accumulates across rows.
