JSON Formatter & Validator

Validate, format, and minify JSON in your browser. This free JSON formatter checks syntax, pretty-prints with 2, 4, or 8-space indentation, and minifies to one line — no upload required.

Paste JSON to validate and format it.

How JSON validation works

The validator runs the browser's built-in JSON parser on every keystroke. Valid input is parsed into objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null. Format reprints it with your chosen indentation of 2, 4, or 8 spaces; minify collapses it to one line. Errors such as missing quotes, unclosed brackets, or trailing commas are reported so you can fix them.

Example: formatting and minifying JSON

Paste a JSON object with a tool name and version number. Choosing Format with 4 spaces produces an indented, multi-line document. Choosing Minify collapses it to a single line. Copy the result to paste it into code or an API request.

Frequently asked questions

What does this JSON formatter do?

It validates JSON syntax, pretty-prints with 2, 4, or 8 spaces of indentation, and minifies to one compact line. Everything runs in your browser, so you can clean API responses and config files without uploading or sharing your data with anyone.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing, formatting, and minification run entirely in your browser using the built-in JSON parser, with no network request. Your data never leaves your device, and nothing is stored, logged, or sent to any server. It stays private to your session.

Can it validate invalid JSON?

Yes. The parser checks the syntax and reports the exact error, such as a missing quote, an unclosed bracket or brace, or a trailing comma. Fix the issue, then click Format again to get valid, pretty-printed JSON. It all happens in your browser.

What indentation sizes can I choose?

You can format with 2, 4, or 8 spaces. The tool reprints the whole document with consistent indentation and double-quoted strings, matching the JSON standard, so nested objects and arrays line up clearly for easy reading and debugging in your editor.

How is minify different from format?

Formatting adds line breaks and indentation to make JSON readable for people. Minification removes all whitespace to produce the smallest valid string, useful for APIs, network payloads, and production files. Both keep the data identical; only the spacing changes.

Can I copy the formatted output?

Yes. Click Copy to place the formatted or minified JSON on your clipboard, then paste it into code, documentation, or an API request. The Copy button appears once output exists and works for both formatted and minified results for later use.

Which JSON features does the parser support?

It supports objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null, including deeply nested structures. It parses standard JSON (RFC 8259) and does not accept JavaScript-style comments, trailing commas, or single-quoted strings.

Does formatting change my data values?

No. Formatting and minification only adjust whitespace and indentation. Numbers, strings, booleans, null, and the order of keys remain exactly as parsed, so your data values are preserved without any loss.
